Explorations in Ecocriticism
Angebote / Angebote:
A chief innovation of Explorations in Ecocriticism is to push ecological criticism beyond its focus on literature to engage with other arts and culture. One of the chapters closely examines some of the fine arts commissioned by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to valorize its big dam projects, no one before me has written about this art collection that toured the nation under the auspices of the Smithsonian in the early 1970s. Another chapter, An Iconography of Sabotage, previously published in France as part of proceedings of a symposium at which I spoke, looks at the pictorial dimension of saboteurs throughout American history, with a special emphasis on the IWW and Earth First! I draw heavily from the social sciences throughout the book. Ecology and environment are treated too often as technical topics that often go over the heads of lay audiences and make for heavy reading. While a number of people care about air and water quality, about the extinction of species, and about the politicization of science, they also find the discourse daunting, the details exceedingly complex. By leavening such heavy subjects with topics that are relevant, Explorations in Ecocriticism will make environmental issues more accessible to lay readers
