In 1979, JEB (Joan E. Biren) self-published her first book, Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians. Revolutionary during that time, JEB captured photos of lesbians in their everyday lives: working, playing, raising families, and most importantly, celebrating their love. The photographs were accompanied by writings from icons including Audre Lorde, Joan Nestle, and Adrienne Rich, as well as testimonials from the women pictured in the book, giving insight into their experiences as lesbians in the 1970s. More than just a book, it was a political charge of lesbian strength.
