Fables, Original and Selected

Excerpt from Fables, Original and Selected: Embellished With Two Hundered and Eighty Engravings on Wood On the life of Æsop, as invented by Planudes, the Greek monk La Motte well remarks that it was a happy thought to make Æsop a slave and his master a philosopher. The slave was to manage his masters pride he dared not speak to him certain home truths, and there was no better way to join sincerity with prudence and respect than by Apologue and Fable. On the other hand, his master would not have acted like a wise man, had he looked no further than the surface. His part was to extract instruction from fictions, in which it was so ingeniously covered. He was to be pleased with the considerate artifice of Æsop, and to forgive him the lesson, for the sake of his address and courtesy. By this may plainly be seen what the author of Fables and his readers are in relation to each other. The Fabulists are the slaves, who are willing to instruct them without hurting their pride. The readers are the masters, who willingly admit the truth, since it is partly left to themselves to have the honour of finding it out.
