Excerpt from Factors in Modern History
Whatever I may hope to say or to do in the ensuing lectures, one thing at least I shall not attempt, and that is, to give you a history of England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centu ries. An effort of that kind would simply result in the perpetration of yet another of those miserable text-books of English history, which may be meces sary but are certainly evil, which prefer knowledge to understanding, and seem expressly designed to nip the bud of historical interest and to clip the wings of historical imagination. It is almost a miracle that any incipient students of history survive this crushing ordeal: if they do, it must be due to the inspiration of the living voice, and no teacher of history worth the name relies upon the compilations which the examination-system compels him to in¿ict upon his class.
