Those baptised were mainly African slaves, to whom an ancient slave, by the sabbath he instituted, still brought a little weekly exodus from their land of bondage. On such a Sunday their dusky forms, arrayed in robes of cotton (their Pharaoh's livery), moved in procession to the bank of the Rappahannock, and there, in crystal waters beneath our blue Virginian sky, were immersed.
