Of late years, too, arboriculture has struck out for itself distinct paths, amongst the most remarkable of which, perhaps, is sea-side planting, which, fifty years or so ago, was looked upon as an eccentric fancy, not likely to become of any practical value to those who attempted it. But since the formation of the Earl of Leicester's woods, and those of Sir Thomas Powell Buxton, on the northern extremity of the county of Norfolk, on the cliffs near that part known as the Yarmouth Roads, the method has become an estab lished fact, which speaks for itself, and upon the spot where the proprietor was once told by a successful planter, that he might as well plant his walking stick upon it, as anything else, plantations now boldly approach the sides of the German Ocean, and the coastguard men of the district have their look-out from the midst of a sylvan bower, which before was bleak and desolate in the extreme. I shall treat again upon this subject as I proceed, but I wish to point out in the first place, the necessity of a correct appropriation of the various kinds or description of trees to suit certain soils, and situations.
