Excerpt from Flaubert Gustave Flaubert est né à Rouen, le 12 décembre 1821. Son père, fils d'un vétérinaire de Nogent-sur-Seine. après avoir fait ses études de médecine à Paris, s'était établi à Rouen et y était devenu le très considéré et même célèbre docteur Flaubert, chirurgien en chef de l'Hôtel-Dieu de Rouen et y demeurant. Sa mère, Anne-Justine-Caroline Fleuriot, était née à Pont-l'Évêque, dans le Calvados, et, par son ascendance maternelle, était alliée aux plus vieilles familles de la basse Normandie. Gustave Flaubert est donc Champenois par son père et Normand par sa mère. Partant il n'y a à tirer de sa race aucune induction relativement à son caractère et à son tour d'esprit.
