A FIRST MONOGRAPH OF AN UNDERREPRESENTED CONTRIBUTOR: Francis-Anne Johnston (1910?1987) was a part of the Canadian art scene during its blossoming Group of Seven period (her father, Frank Johnston, was a founder of the Group). She was surrounded by the leading artists of her time, and her work was of a similar calibre, but it hasn't received its due attention until now.
FEMINIST RECLAMATION: The authors situate Johnston within the social mores of her era where women artists were balancing their careers with their domestic obligations, and recover her artistic voice by republishing an article Johnston had written.
U.S. CONNECTIONS: As a teenager, Johnston's family lived in Philadelphia and New York City, where she was influenced by the international art collections she encountered in these cities. Johnston's work was part of the 1947 Canadian Women Artists exhibition
at the former Riverside Museum in New York City, alongside 70 of Canada's finest
young female painters.
TRAVELLING EXHIBITION: This monograph was created in the context of the exhibition A Family Palette: Frances-Anne Johnston, Franz Johnston, and Franklin Arbuckle, organized and held at the Ottawa Art Gallery, Ottawa, ON (2022?23), and toured to the RiverBrink Art Museum, Queenston, ON (2023), and the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery, Sarnia, ON (2023?24).
BILINGUAL EDITION: The text is presented in English and French.
