Excerpt from Freedom Under Planning
This essay is an attempt to say a little on a very large, very pressing and generally neglected subject. I hope it may be read at least as much as an appeal to others to join in tackling that subject, as for any positive contribution that these pages may themselves contain.
That contribution would have been even less adequate than it is, or indeed might never have been made at all, had it not been for five people, to whom special thanks are due: to Bill and Gwen Hilliard for providing refuge from the household chores and bombs that are so detrimental to writing, to Leonora Simeon for making an impossible manuscript into a clean typescript, to Barbara Kyle for checking many irritating details and contributing many constructive criticisms, and to my husband, George Wright, for daily experience in the marriage of freedom and planning.
I have also to thank Professor F. A. Hayek for his kindness in letting me have an early view of his Road to Serfdom. Much of what I have written is devoted to criticism of the views put forward by Professor Hayek in this and other books. Intellectual controversy on serious practical and political issues is not always conducted in an atmosphere of personal goodwill. It is on that account the greater pleasure to express here my appreciation and reciprocation of the unchanging friendliness of Professor Hayek's attitude.
