The Gaucho Martín Fierro
Angebote / Angebote:
An Argentine epic poem, well known among the gaucho class. The poem was intended to open their eyes to spur them on to better their position and condition, and has been recently revived in an attempt to bring to light the national art and literature. Rhythm good and exciting - well paced - not too literal in translation. The story of Martin, a cowboy who is drafted to fight the Indians and finds himself instead farming for the government, under filthy conditions and cruel treatment. After two years, he escapes, gets into successive hot water, and in escaping is forced to live with the Indians. Eventually he reaches home to find his wife dead, his sons fled, his house sold by the government. He meets up with his sons, and they are joined by a third, son of his pal of the past who is dead - and the four go their separate ways to try for new turn of luck. Good pictures of the life of the gaucho, the oppression of the government, the Indian life. Well made book, with line drawings. Deserves the attention of anyone interested in South American affairs.
