In great poverty and want, managed to help themselves and exist, preparing the pleasant, blooming surround ings wherein succeeding generations now dwell in plenteous prosperity. The early German settlers were nearly all from the Palatinate. And were what at the present day are known as squatters. They selected a tract of land, built on it a log-house of the most primitive character. And began to clear and cultivate the soil as though they owned the land. At that time great complaint was made to the Governor at Philadelphia, that the Germans every where took up the best land, and were a dangerous class.
