The GIDS Project is part of the EC-funded Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe (DRIVE) Programme. The project aims at determining the requirements and design standards for an intelligent electronic co-driver system. Such a system would support human vehicle operators during task-performance (ie driving) by providing them with information (road conditions, engine status), advice and warning, or, under certain critical circumstances, interventions. The contributions introduce the GIDS concept, describe the GIDS system, evaluate GIDS performance, assess GIDS acceptance and offer recommendations for successful GIDS implementation.
