His grandparents were famine Irish who emigrated to Monmouth County New Jersey from East Galway, Ireland. On weekends George traveled back from Jersey City to the rural farmlands of Monmouth County to work with his father John Joseph Tiernan, a tenant farmer. During the week George worked for American Type Foundry. George had his foot in both worlds while his generation transitioned from farm labor work to company jobs.
