Excerpt from Handbooks for the Clergy: The Study of the Gospels This little book has grown out of a series of lectures, of which the first three were delivered from the pulpit of Westminster Abbey in Advent, 1900, and the remainder in the Divinity School at Cambridge in the following year. I have availed myself of the present opportunity to revise and supplement what I originally said, but I have been unwilling to abandon the easier style and more direct address which belong to the lecture as compared with the formal manual. The method of the book is neither systematic nor controversial. My object has been to present in plain language such results of my own study as may serve as a guide to the studies of others.
