He came to believe strongly in the power of the individual to communicate directly with God and of his right to interpret the teachings of Jesus for himself. Rapp's great energy, strong intellect, and high moral force marked him for a leader, and soon he was preaching to a small group of followers. Harrassed by the established church which naturally opposed any flouting of its authority, his flock sought refuge in a land where they could live free from interference and according to the principles of primitive Christianity.
