To his inquiry for letters by the late Bishop, the general answer was, "I have a great number, but they are all short business letters, and can be of no possible use to the Memoir." The fact is, that the Bishop's golden rule of answering letters by return of post, coupled with the largeness of his daily correspondence, prevented him from leaving any literary legacy, of the kind required, to his biographer. The need was, however, in part supplied by the interesting little autobiographical memoir, in which the Bishop had chronicled for his family facts of his early life and of his Cambridge and Ely days. This memoir, as well as his pamphlet, "Ely Gossip, " which was published after his death, has been freely laid under contribution.
