While Mr. Longfellow was in his usual health, somewhat more than a year ago, he kindly undertook the task of looking over my Sketch of James Russell Lowell. I had asked him to do this friendly service for me, and for Mr. Lowell, who could not be conveniently consulted. I have still the proof-sheets with annotations in his well-known hand.
