Higher Education in a Post-Binary Era uses institutional case studies from four countries- Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong- to explore the changes which have taken place therein over the last decade. The contributors identify the major factors that brought about the decisions to abandon the binary divide between polytechnic universities and universities adopted between 1967 and 1972, and examine the environments into which the newly designated universities emerged. These universities are subsequently considered in terms of their new status and role, their response to the internationalization of higher education and the extent to which they are modeling themselves on the older universities.This book provides a useful insight into the similarities and differences between developments in the four national systems which will be of great interest to academics and administrators at all levels of policy-making.
