Excerpt from History and Genealogy of the Jacob Turpin Branch of the Turpin Family: Being a Brief History and Genealogy of the Members of the First and Second Generations, and a Genealogy of the Members of All Other Generations Down to the Present Time
Jacob Turpin was born in Eastern Maryland March 14, 1785. His father's name was William Turpin, and his mother's name was Nancy Hanly. William Turpin and Nancy Hanly were married in Maryland in 1783 - the exact date is not now known.
According to a tradition which has come down to the later generations of the Turpin family, Jacob Turpin's grandfather was a Revolutionary soldier and lived to be more than 100 years old.
As evidence tending to show that in all probability this tradition is founded on facts, I quote from a letter written by Dr. W. H. Hyten of Ladoga, Indiana, to Wallace Turpin of Indianapolis, in 1906. Dr. Hyten is a grandson of a sister of Jacob Turpin's and was 84 years old when he wrote the letter.
Dr. Hyten said: "On the 10th day of October, 1833. I saw at my father's house, James Turpin and his wife, Sarah Turpin, each of them being more than 100 years old."
