How to Study the Old Testament in a Series of Questions (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from How to Study the Old Testament in a Series of Questions The object of these questions is to teach the history of the Jewish people, in its connection with the Psalms, prophets, and New Testament. Those who fail to study one part of the Bible with another, miss much of the interest of the Book, as well as the grand aim of the whole. There are those who ignore the Old Testament as unspiritual and unpracticable. To such the example of our Lord should be enough. He constantly instructed the people in the Old Testament, and in his very last hours with his disciples, after his resurrection, we are told, that, beginning at Moses, and all the Prophets, he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. "Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures." Much of the New Testament, which consists so largely in quotations from and allusions to the Old Testament, must be a dead letter to those ignorant of the connection of such passages. The Epistle to the Hebrews is an enigma to those unacquainted with the Jewish ritual. The record of the sacrifices and services of the Jewish Church are God's own illustrations of the atonement and way of access for sinners to Him. The Passover, the daily bloody sacrifices, the brazen serpent, the Tabernacle, all set forth the "Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world." The recorded experience and biography of the Old Testament are but illustrations of the principles laid down in the New Testament.
