Music played a key role in the politicization of society in the 19th and 20th century. As a form of expression and as a purveyor of political messages, music can be considered an emotional communicative event. In addition to encouraging conviviality, music also generates values and fosters identity and solidarity. The vision of a 'German' music as an aesthetic concept of identity had a potent impact in the societal redefinition of 'German-ness'. But what characterises the "German-ness" in music? This volume examines the phenomenon in an interdisciplinary and transnational dialogue between the Revolution of 1848 and the Second World War. There emerges a panorama of societal and political inclusion and exclusion processes that occurred, transformed and were redefined through models of a propagated 'German' music and 'power culture
