Excerpt from Isis, 1923, Vol. 5: International Review Devoted to the History of Science and Civilization The aim of this essay is twofold. I have noticed that some people shrink from our studies with a sort of fear or uneasiness as if they considered them uncanny glorifications of intelligence against the qualities of the heart. I propose on the one hand to show that their attitude is unjustified at least with regard to the history of science as we (the friends of Isis) understand it, on the other hand to insist that the task of the historian should no'. Be restricted to the more technical aspect of scientific discovery. The history of science is essentially a story of human achievement, and to appre ciate fairly what any man of science achieved we must needs take the whole of his life into account. A cobbler who would undertake to make shoes to order before having become sufficiently expert, would be guilty. A physician who would assume to treat patients without a sufficient knowledge of medicine, would be criminal. If we were ill-treated by either of them, we would feel warranted to denounce their ignorance and mal feasance. What shall we say of the men who presume to judge the universe without any positive knowledge of it, of the priests who speak of God without having ever taken the trouble lo stud} His laws?
