Excerpt from Jack Harkaway and His Son's Adventures Round the World
You who have followed Jack Harkaway's progress at school and Oxford, on sea and land, at home and abroad, have seen how brave he was in boyhood, and noble in his manhood.
Jack Harkaway's life glided on smoothly enough for some years.
But life is made up of joys and sorrows - of smiles and tears.
When our Jack's son was just turned twelve years old, a great and unexpected sorrow came upon him and his family. His father fell ill.
The family doctor was called in and consulted by Jack with some eagerness, for the old gentleman's complaint had puzzled them.
"If you can tell us what's the matter with my poor governor, " said Jack, "we shall look upon you as a wonder."
"Why so?"
"Because it has bothered us all."
"What are the symptoms?" demanded Doctor Purcell.
"That is difficult to answer."
"Indeed?"
"There are no painful symtoms."
"Doesn't he complain of any thing?"
"Lassitude, weakness, dizziness in the head."
