Excerpt from Jacob Brown: And Other PoemsIF any apology is necessary for the gathering together of these articles in verse, it should come from another source than the author. Those who have honored me by reading my first vol ume will discover a marked dil'ference in the character of the two books. And it may be to my prejudice with some of them, but a close observation has taught me that humor is more graciously received by the general reader than mere fine sentiment. If any thing in these pages shall leave an impression that I have ih dulged a less worthy spirit, it must be regarded as growing out of an inability to make myself clearly understood. I have con ceived no satire. I have given no individuality or special dirce tion to any line in the book, and those who know me best will readily acquit me cf any design to be other than amiable and delicate in every allusion.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
