Excerpt from James Outram, Vol. 1 of 2: A Biography
I take this opportunity of acknowledging the kind manner in which these volumes have been received by friends, reviewers, and the public - exemplified in numerous private letters, notices of the Press, and notably the demand for a second edition. While regretting that my transliteration of Oriental words has not met with general approbation, I may add that it is simply the dryness of the discussion which prevents a defence and full explanation of the course pursued. In any case, it will be understood that a change of orthography in a second edition would be difficult. To the present reprint an additional map has been supplied, at the suggestion of a friendly critic. Otherwise, the only chapter in which any modification worthy of note has been thought necessary is the First of the Second Book. For the more detailed description of the Forts of Manohar and Mansantosh and sundry new details belonging to the subject treated, I am indebted to General Sir Le Grand Jacob - a high authority, of whose welcome offer of assistance I have readily taken advantage.
