In 1844 the great division occurred, and in 1845 the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was organized. Continuous activity in Holston Conference was abandoned until the close of the civil war. In 1865 the Holston Conference was re-organized at Athens, Tenn., under the Preseidency of Bishop David W. Clark.
