The editor has aimed at encouraging intelligent rapid reading rather than a minute study of the text, the grammatical and philological elements in the notes have therefore been reduced to the minimum, lexicons being sup plemented, less usual idioms and constructions ex plained, and difficult phrases occasionally turned. Pains have been taken to provide ample historical comment, though such must necessarily be concise.
