Hence the title under which the collection is grouped.The interest of the first story, which is characterized by simplicity and clearness of style, seemingly centers in the person of that adventurous runaway boy who, after leaving his quiet home in the Black Forest, becomes a soldier of fortune, selling his body in turns to friend and foe - be they French or British or Italian.
