Excerpt from Kwang Tung, Vol. 1: Or Five Years in South China
Kwang Tung, Canton, or the Broad East, is the province of which the City of Rams, known among foreigners as Canton, is the capital. Western traders visited it as early as sixteen hundred years ago, and for centuries it was the only point of contact between China and other countries. At Canton also those events took place which led to the war known as the Opium War, and the consequent breaking down of the nation's exclusiveness.
The following chapters contain a description of missionary life and work in this province, together with some information about the history, religions, manners, and customs of the natives, the manufactures and trade of China, town and country life, conditions of travelling in the South, the character of the people, and the prospects of Christian missions among them. An account of Hong Kong and Macao is also included.
The book is mostly based on personal observation and experience, but Dr Williams' standard work The Middle Kingdom, The Records of the Shanghai Conference, 1890, and other works have been carefully studied.
