Excerpt from Landnama Book of Iceland as It Illustrates the Dialect, Place Names, Folk Lore, & Antiquities of Cumberland, North Lancashire
First I have tried to trace out the very close connexion between the early Norse settlers in the North of Britain and Iceland, their Language, Place Names, and Folklore, from a careful reading and rendering of the Landnama itself, and on this I have based the Introduction.
I have also obtained much help in Words and Early History from the Icelandic English Dictionary of Cleasby and Vigfusson, also Sturlunga Saga (two vols.), Corpus Poeticum Boreale (2 vols.), all from Clarendon Press, also Saga Library, in several vols. (Morris and Magnusson), Northmen in Cumberland and Westmorland (Ferguson).
"A Bran Naw Wark, " published at Kendal, in 1785, with a second title "A Plain Address written in the provincial dialect of the Barony of Kendal, " by Rev. W. Hutton, Rector of Beetham from 1762 until 1811, I have found useful in looking out some of the older words and phrases of the Old Westmorland Dialect. This work was edited by the Rev. Professor Skeat, and published by English Dialect Society in 1879. It contains a Glossary with about 320 dialect words, and this as far I know is the only printed Glossary of the Westmorland Dialect as distinct from those of Cumberland and North Lancashire. To Professor Skeat, who presented me with this volume some years ago, I here make my grateful acknowledgments.
I have also referred to the kind help received from Mr. Magnusson in the passages where I have quoted that help, and I here acknowledge the most cordial manner in which that help has been given.
