A timely collection that speaks across borders: The performance poems in Elena Salamanca's Landsmoder draw critical connections between interlocking systems of structural abuse. As both a historian and a poet, Salamanca is attuned to the power of collective memory and the uniting force of shared grief. Having originally performed these poems in San Salvador's Plaza Morazán as a protest against El Salvador's 2011 bicentennial celebration of the mythologized "Primer grito de la independencia (First cry of independence), ” Salamanca's work combines rigorous historical grounding, fearless lyric expression, and an uncompromising commitment to justice-rooted poetics.
Celebrated in contemporary Salvadoran culture: Born in San Salvador in 1982, Salamanca now lives in Mexico where she studies the history of Central American unity, citizenship, and exile. Her performance art, poetry, and fiction engage directly with legacies of sexism, silencing, and, importantly, resilience. In the words of Silvia Gianni, Elena's work illuminates the collective nature of shared grief as she composes "a cartography of pain that can be shaped by the historicization of suffering.” As Lucia de Sola wrote for La Piscucha, "[Elena] is not only a feminist leader in our country, but also one of the leading voices of her generation.”
