Excerpt from Lecture on Modern Applications of Chemistry to Crop ProductionIN general, chemists have adopted two methods in applying chemistry to cr0p production, they have endeavoured to explain the processes found successful by farmers, and they are developing a science which the expert can use in improving old methods of cr0p production or devising new ones.Much of the modern work arose out of the attempt, very successfully made by Lawes Gilbert, 80 years ago, to explain the fertilising value of farmyard manure. They showed that it was largely due to nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus present, and on the basis of this result was developed the present day artificial fertiliser industry. Recent work however shows that this is not a complete explanation of the value of farmyard manure.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
