Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Common Prayer: Being the Substance of Discourses Delivered in Lent, 1858-9, in the Parish Church of St. Anne, Dublin Augustine, however, and the succeeding bishops of that church were allowed to make alterations at their own discretion in the prayers, chants, rites, and ceremonies used in their several dioceses, hence arose that variety of rituals, or uses, as they are called, which are referred to in the preface of our Prayer Book concerning the service OF the church. These were known by the names of the different dioceses where they were employed, as, for exam ple, the Salisbury use, the Hereford use, and those of Bangor, Y orle, and Lincoln. Of these the most remarkable and the most generally adopted was the form of Salisbury diocese, called the Use of Sarum.
