Excerpt from Legends Superstitions A belief in witchcraft has prevailed more or less in all ages, in civilised as well as in savage countries, and even yet it is far from being extinct, or seeming to border on extinction, in the most enlightened Christian countries. It is held, indeed, to rest on orthodox Scriptural authority, God himself having given this positive command to his chosen people - "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." - a command as little fettered by conditions or exceptions as that other better known but too loosely observed one - "Thou shalt not kill." An intelligent old lady of my acquaintance once told me flatly, that if she were forced to give up her belief in the existence of witches, she would consider that one of the sure foundations of her faith was taken away.
