Excerpt from Letter From the Secretary of the Interior: Communicating, in Compliance With the Resolution of the Senate of the 2d Instant, Information in Relation to the Early Labors of the Missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in 1836 Immediately on the appearance of said Executive Document No. 38, of the Thirty fifth Congress, though long after its publication, a committee was appointed at a pub lic meeting in Linn County, Oregon, to investigate said document, with power to send for documents and to collect testimony, they immediately addressed a circular of ques tions to many old Oregonians, officers, civil and military, and to the surviving captives and sufferers of the Whitman massacre and the Indian wars that followed. A great amount of valuable testimony has thus been collected, completely refuting the charges made in said document under the strange heading, Protestantism in Oregon, against the early pioneers of Oregon.
