This wise reticence on his part accounted for much of the success his arms met with, as his enemies were continually taken by surprise. In 1622 Spinola may be said to have nearly reached the zenith of his military fame. He had overrun and conquered most of the Palatinate, and had so effectually terrified some of the princes of the German Union, who were, as Maurice of Nassau wittily said, rich enough to make a feast, but too poor to make a war, 3 that they had come to terms with the emperor.
