Mr. Collins, who was then mayor of the city, agreed to attend a small dinner party in his honor at a leading hotel, although he was suffering keenly from rheumatism at the time. He left the dining hall early and proceeded to his room. After his guests had separated for the evening, the governor with his customary kindliness called upon Mr. Collins to inquire after his health and comfort.
