Life of the Right Reverend Samuel Wilberforce, D.D, Vol. 1 of 3

Excerpt from Life of the Right Reverend Samuel Wilberforce, D.D, Vol. 1 of 3: Lord Bishop of Oxford and Afterwards of Winchester, With Selections From His Diaries and Correspondence As the eldest surviving son of Bishop Wilberforce, to whom he left all his letters and papers, I wish to say a word of preface to this history of his life. Canon Ashwell, at my request, and by the advice of many of my Father's oldest friends, has undertaken the arduous task of biographer. For various reasons I should have preferred delaying the publication for some years, but I have yielded to the pressing solicitations of many whose opinions I felt myself bound to respect. It has not been my desire, as it certainly would have been most repugnant to his feelings, for my Father to be represented as a faultless hero. His life is no private biography. From the close of the year 1845 to the year l873, it is really a part of the annals of the Church of England, as well as the Memoir of Bishop Wilberforce. It is in this spirit that this Life has been undertaken: it is in this spirit that it is given to the world. But it is equally certain that the true story of his life cannot be told without setting forth a great example, and without exhibiting a character of single-minded devotion to his country, to his Church, and above all to his Master.
