It can be shown that the essential di¿'erence between the two theories as to the nature of electrical and magnetic fields is to be found in the expression for the energy in each separate volume element of the region concerned. An exposition of the principles of the localisation and migration of energy has been given here as being in the highest degree fruitful and suggestive, and the most important applications of the subject - the production of currents by induction, the working of motors, and the exertion of force - depend upon the transformation of mechanical forms of energy into energy of the electro-magnetic field, and conversely. Since the consideration of these energy-transformations plays so fundamental a part in this book, I might have chosen for its title Magnetic Fields of Energy.'
