Management and measurement of stress on police personnel working in Naxalite

Abstract The present research portrays the stressful life of police personnel in a strife prone area (Dantewada). This research work intended to study the impact of various stress relaxation techniques (Vipasana, Pranayam & PMR) on the psyche (stress, coping, values and work alienation) of constables. So for fulfilling this aim researcher applied these various techniques on constables up to one hour daily for a month .All the constables were from the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh .Total sample size was 120.Further this sample was divided into one Control group and three Experimental groups. The techniques were applied only in to on experimental groups. To understand the variables the following questionnaire were used, job stress questionnaire by Sarita Bhaskar, coping strategies scale by A.K. Srivastava, OCTAPACE profile by Uday Pareek, and work alienation scale by Madhu Asthana, were employed on overall sample, once before intervention and once after the intervention. Besides this semi structured interview was conducted to get to those issues which were not tapped by the questionnaire. Analysis of variance was applied to perceive the group differences, associations among variables were obtained and relationship of stress with other variables was explored through bi-variate correlation. Results depicts that there is significant differences among the groups on the dimension of variables of work alienation, octapace, stress and coping, and also the more the exposure to different intervention, more is the reduction in stress, work alienation and avoidance coping, and more is the increase in approach coping and values. Job stress and work alienation was positively related with each other, and avoidance coping and stress was also positively related to each other. On the other hand approach coping and stress was negatively related to each other same with the case with values. Further content analysis of the interview reveals that there were two major reasons behind the stress of police personnel working in Naxalite area, one is the quasi - military type structure of police organization and the other is in that area they were devoid of basics facilities .So from the quantitative and qualitative finding of the research, it can be suggested that one needs to make changes related to their life in general both organizational as well as beyond it. The interventions broken down the experience of stress, alienation and avoidance coping. The organizational variables were not much affected by the interventions.
