Excerpt from Measurements of Combined Axial Mass and Heat Transport in He IIThis is the first report Of the results of an investigation of steady-state combined heat transport and fluid flow Of the superfluid phase of helium 4 (known as He II) through a long tube. The first experiments of this type, both at Leiden have been reported only in the last few years [1 This is the first to be done in this country, and the first to investi gate, with an unambiguous method, flow in which both fluid components are turbulent. There are two motivations for this work, one scientific and one Of an applied nature. A considerable amount is known about the extraordinary hydrodynamics of He II in certain idealized situations (i e., where the velocities are small, and laminar or potential flow is taking place), rather little is known about the hydrodynamics of He II when the flow is turbulent, and so new types Of experiments in this area, are Of fundamental interest. From the standpoint of applications, He II is of interest mainly for its excellent heat transfer properties, which can be utilized in the construction of superconducting devices. This experiment is the first to attempt to determine the effect of forced convection, i.e., mass flow, on the heat transported by the fluid. The term heat transport in the context of this paper is used to mean heat transported in the axial direction by the fluid contained in a long tube which connects a cold fluid reservoir to a hot fluid reservoir. This is not to be confused with the more familiar problem of heat transfer from a solid wall into the liquid.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
