But upon mature consideration, I am inclined to stand by that statement. I know well enough that numerous passages from the letters and prose writings of Elliott might be adduced to show that he held Wordsworth in high estimation, and he is credited to this extent in my analysis of his genius and writings. What he did not appreciate, however, was what Wordsworth most valued in the judgment of his readers, namely, the spirituality with which he endeavoured to invest external nature, and the life of man. And this endeavour, which lies at the root of all Wordsworth's writings, Elliott had little or no sympathy with.
