This is especially so in that I have come to the conclusion that there is no character of the sugarcane so stable as that which can be observed by a study of the field as a whole, the tillering, erectness, form of bunching, fall of leaves, angle of leaves to the stem, manner in which the ends of the leaves curve at different stages, blushing of the leaf sheath and stem on exposure, rooting and Shooting, and any other marked peculiarity of growth - such are characters which can only be noted after a longer field study than has been possible.
