Obwohl der Name der Band offensichtlich eine Adaption aus der Bibel ist, behandeln die Liedtexte ein weit gefächertes Spektrum an Themen, so handelt M.I.A. (Abk. für en. Missing in Action) von einem Soldaten und Critical Acclaim kritisiert die USA und ihre Einwohner. Oftmals werden jedoch auch emotionalere Themen wie Liebe, Tod und Verzweiflung angesprochen, so beispielsweise in den Liedern Afterlife und Second Heartbeat. Außergewöhnlich ist auch das Stück A Little Piece of Heaven, welches stark an eine Oper erinnert. Avenged Sevenfold wurde 1999 von M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance, The Rev und Matt Wendt in Kalifornien gegründet. Der von M. Shadows kreierte Name ist eine Adaption aus der biblischen Geschichte des Kain und Abel.
