Excerpt from Metaphysical EssaysI will not say that we can understand the beginning or first cause, but evidently it is easier to understand that a Law, or Force, existed by which atoms were drawn to coherence, than to believe that the atoms came together without law.It is easier to understand, and more reasonable to believe, that there was a law, or force, by which the primordial atoms were attracted to each other, thus giving existence to forms, than that the atoms took form without law, and afterwards became the creator of law.
