Excerpt from Methods and Experiments in Mental Tests This book is an attempt to provide, in a manner readily comprehensible to all those interested in the subject, an answer to some of the more important questions that have been asked as to the nature, validity, and methods of application of mental tests, and the conclusions to be drawn there-from. It is not an attempt to theorize, but to illustrate general principles on a strictly empirical and experimental basis, and it is hoped that all who follow developments in education and in psychology may find some points of interest in it. The experiment described in the second part of Chapter V was carried out in the county of Northumberland. The note at the end of Chapter IV was published in The British Journal of Psychology (April 1922), and I am grateful to the Editor for permission to include it in this book.
