The plant started right off manufacturing building materials and has been running ever since.In 1890, when North Wilkesboro acquired its name, this plant was the first manufacturing enterprise that the town had In the next few years, there were located in the town the C C Smoot Sons Company tannery, which was the largest in the South and is now owned by the International Shoe Company, Forest Furniture Company, Oak Furniture Company, Turner - White Casket Company, and other plants. Today there are five furniture factories, one tannery, one cotton mill, one hosiery mill, one casket factory, one grist mill and saw mill factory, one butter and cheese factory, one roller mill, one mirror factory, three wood working plants and other plants, making a total of twenty indus trial plants in N orth Wilkesboro.North Wilkesboro's industrial expansion has been steady. It is known today as a leading furniture manufacturing center.
