INTRODUCTION Adolescence represents an inner emotional upheaval, a struggle between the eternal human wish to cling to the past and the equally powerful wish to get on with the future. - Louise J. Kaplan. Of all age groups Adolescence represents the most crucial stage of human development. Several theorists have contributed different viewpoints and explanations to behavioural changes/patterns specific to this age group(e.g., Freud, 1950, Mead, 1974). Adolescence begins with the onset of puberty. The term adolescence is derived from Latin word ¿Adolescere¿ meaning "to grow" or "to grow to maturity". The term adolescence includes mental, emotional and social maturity. Psychologically, adolescence is the age when the individual becomes integrated into the society of adults, the age when the child never feels that he is below the level of his elders but he feels he is equal, at least in rights (Hurlock, 1981). The dividing line between early and late adolescence is somewhat arbitrarily placed at round seventeen years. Early adolescence extends roughly from 13 years to 16 year and late adolescence covers the period from then until eighteen, the age of legal maturity. However, the studies of changes in behaviour, attitudes and values throughout adolescence have revealed not only that these changes are more rapid in the early part than in the later part of adolescence but also that the behaviour is markedly different between the two periods,
