During this period the east-central-illinois Region averaged 33 percent of the state's production of clay products, 32 percent of the gravel, 29 percent of the sand, 16 percent of the crushed and broken stone, 8 percent of the coal, and percent of the crude oil. In addition, this region is the single most important area in the state for the production of silica sand and cement. The size of the payroll and the number of employees dependent upon the mineral industries in selected counties in the east-central Illi nois Region are shown in table 1.The value of mineral production for the region (table 2) was $84. 8 million in 1963 and million in 1964, or 13. 8 percent and 12. 7 percent, respectively, of the state total for each of the two years.
