Excerpt from Mineral Resources and Mineral Industries of the Northeastern Illinois RegionThe relative importance of the region as a producer of various min eral commodities between 1956 and 1966 is shown in figure 2. During this peri od, the Northeastern Illinois Region averaged 49 percent of the state's produc tion of gravel, 45 percent of the crushed and broken stone, 37 percent of the sand, 32 percent of the clay products, and about 1 percent of the coal. In ad dition, it is the largest producer of lime in Illinois. The size of the pay roll and the number of employees dependent upon the mineral industries in the Northeastern Illinois Region are given on a county basis in table 1.The value of mineral production in the region (table 2) was million in 1965 and million in 1966, or percent and percent, respectively, of the state total for each of the two years. The commodities produced, in order of their 1966 value, were stone and lime, clay products, gravel, sand, and coal.Each of the commodities is discussed in terms of resources, past and present production, and the extent of producing facilities.
